Nicki Minaj Got on That Stage and Lost My Respect

Opinion by Kevin Harvey

Nicki. Girl. Come get your shit.

Because you are out here doing the absolute most for Donald Trump, and I’m supposed to look at this mess and say, “Yes, queen”?

Fuck no.

As a Black man and a fellow Trini, I’m embarrassed. You got all that talent, all that money, all that influence—and THIS is what you’re choosing to do with it?

You out here lending your name to Trump like the rest of us are supposed to follow behind you because we know the words to “Super Bass.”

Baby, I bought a song. I did not sign a political power of attorney.

You Came to Talk Politics. He Started Talking About Your Ass.

Let’s get into the part that had me looking at the screen sideways.

At his October 25 Michigan rally, Trump called Nicki’s backside “one hell of a beautiful ass” and asked her to stand up. That’s the reported exchange—not an instruction to shake it.

And THAT is the man you’re going so hard for?

You showed up giving him your celebrity, your audience, your platform. He got on that microphone and started talking about your ass.

Girl.

You came with an endorsement. He came with a comment about your body. And somehow we’re supposed to walk away impressed by this relationship?

I walked away embarrassed for you.

You can tell yourself it was a compliment. You can laugh it off. That’s your business. But from where I’m sitting, that shit looked disrespectful.

And I have questions about where all that Nicki Minaj energy went.

Because you have plenty to say when somebody else rubs you the wrong way. Where was that mouth then? Where was the “don’t play with me” attitude?

Or does everybody get checked except the man with the presidential seal?

And About That Voting Situation…

Before somebody starts hollering in my comments, let’s keep the facts straight.

Nicki previously said she wasn’t a U.S. citizen. In January 2026, she said she was finalizing her paperwork. Reporting ahead of the election said she hadn’t publicly confirmed completing the process, so her voting eligibility remained unclear.

I haven’t seen her paperwork. I’m not about to make up what’s in it.

What we DO know is that she publicly encouraged young Americans to vote Republican.

So explain the pitch, Nicki.

What exactly are you asking people to sign up for? Which policies? What do working people get? What do the families listening to you get?

Because “he’s nice to me” is not enough.

We have rent due. Groceries to buy. Children to raise. People are trying to get through the damn week. You owe them a better explanation than how special somebody made you feel.

The Barbz Are Not a Voting District You Own

Some celebrities get so used to fans defending every outfit, every lyric, every argument, that they start thinking the support comes with no conditions.

Well, here’s a condition: I’m allowed to think your politics are bullshit.

You can rap your ass off and still have terrible judgment. Both can be true.

People bought your albums because they liked your music. They didn’t hand you the keys to their conscience.

And please don’t act like everybody criticizing you is jealous, brainwashed, or incapable of thinking for themselves.

I thought about it.

I watched it.

I still think this shit is embarrassing.

Yes, I’m Calling This a Sellout

Let me speak for myself, because Black people are not one person and Trinidadians don’t all share one brain.

To ME, this looks like selling out.

Your career grew through Black music and culture. People spent years giving you their time, money, attention, and loyalty. Now you’re using that enormous platform to promote a political movement I oppose.

That’s going to change how I look at you.

Then I watch the man you’re promoting turn your body into a rally talking point, and I’m supposed to respect the whole arrangement?

Nah. I’m good.

You have every right to stand beside him. I have every right to stop standing beside you.

And don’t come looking for automatic loyalty from people whose concerns you haven’t bothered to answer.

The Delegation Has Reached a Decision

Now, obviously, I can’t revoke your Blackness. I can’t take Trinidad off your birth certificate. There is no official delegation office upstairs processing your paperwork.

But that imaginary card that says, “Kevin still fucks with you”?

Hand that shit over.

Put it on the desk. Don’t bend the corner. We might recycle it.

Because I’m tired of watching famous people confuse getting access with earning respect. You got close to power. Wonderful. What are you actually doing with that access—and why should the rest of us applaud?

You can keep making music. People can keep listening. Everybody gets to make their own choice.

But me?

I’m not defending this mess because you made songs I used to love.

Nicki, you chose this stage. You chose this endorsement. You chose to put your name behind this man.

So own that shit.

And understand that some of us are choosing to leave you standing right there.
